Dangote Cement Plc has announced an ambitious sustainability roadmap designed to reduce its net carbondioxide – CO2 emissions intensity by 20% and expand its installed production capacity to 80 million tonnes per annum – MTPA by 2030.

Unveiled at the company’s 17th Annual General Meeting – AGM in Lagos, the plans align with Dangote Industries Limited’s overarching Vision 2030. Chairman Emmanuel Ikazoboh presented the company’s 2025 Sustainability Scorecard, emphasizing that sustainability has transitioned from a mere compliance obligation into a core business strategy engineered to drive resilient growth and long-term value creation across Africa.

A central piece of the company’s decarbonization agenda involves a major shift toward cleaner transportation and alternative energy sources. By 2027, all fleet trucks operating in Nigeria, with the exception of the Gboko plant, will run on Compressed Natural Gas – CNG, preceded by the strategic introduction of electric trucks in 2026. Furthermore, the cement manufacturer has successfully integrated circular economy practices through its “DangCircular” initiative, co-processing over 437,000 tonnes of waste as alternative fuel to minimize reliance on traditional fossil fuels. These operational adjustments have already yielded a 6.5% reduction in CO_2 emissions intensity from the company’s 2021 baseline.

Simultaneously, Dangote Cement is aggressively scaling its infrastructure to consolidate its position as Africa’s premier cement exporter. The company is actively expanding its port infrastructure at key Nigerian hubs, including Apapa, Onne, and Lekki, while preparing to establish new production operations in Botswana and Zimbabwe to meet its 80 million MTPA capacity target by 2030.

Alongside these logistical expansions, the group recorded measurable environmental efficiency gains during the review period, including a 1.7% improvement in energy intensity, a 4% decline in overall energy consumption, and an 8% reduction in water usage.

On the social and human capital front, the manufacturer invested N2.1 billion in employee training and development to foster an inclusive, high-performance workplace. These efforts successfully generated 625 direct green jobs and boosted social investment spending by 56%.

Additionally, graduate trainee recruitment surged by 74% to help cultivate the next generation of African industrial professionals. To complement this human-centric development, the firm launched the “Dangote Tree-to-Forest Programme” for the 2025 financial year, a biodiversity initiative aiming to afforest 200 hectares of land in each operating country over five years by planting 700 trees per hectare for carbon sequestration.

In terms of corporate governance, Dangote Cement has significantly matured its executive accountability and climate risk oversight. The company recently strengthened its environmental, social, and governance – ESG framework by introducing an Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Policy, alongside dedicated Biodiversity and Disability Inclusion policies, while integrating 297 local vendors into its sustainable supply chain.

These structural improvements have earned the company an international ‘B’ rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project – CDP for climate and water security disclosures. Moving forward, the company has pledged to voluntarily adopt the IFRS Sustainability Standards well ahead of statutory mandates, positioning itself to lead sustainable industrialization across the continent.
